I bought the BCD160DN to monitor aircraft, amateur radio (analog FM, DMR, and NXDN) and analog Public Service frequencies (EMS, Fire, Police) for my area of Vermont and Eastern NY State. The scanner is very easy to program using the free, downloadable programming software right from the Uniden.com website. The same programming software is also used for the desktop/mobile BCD260DN scanner, which I also use in my home.
I am happy to report that the scanner is designed with (10) user-defined channel banks, so it's an easy matter to sort your listening preferences into logical, easy to find groups. The scanner excels at both traditional analog FM reception, as well as digital DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) and NXDN (Next Generation Digital Narrowband). Audio quality is excellent on both analog and digital. DMR is used for not only amateur radio, but for many businesses as well. NXDN is the digital protocol of choice for many of the larger railroads in the USA (although they're still using analog FM here in VT). If DMR and NXDN meet your needs, the BCD160DN has both digital modes already built in, so you won't have to invest in any firmware upgrades to receive them.
My area of the world still uses analog FM for Public Service frequencies because of the mountainous terrain. That being said, many urban areas have moved EMS, Fire, and Police to the P25 (Project 25) digital format, which this scanner is not designed to receive. Be sure 'what' types of transmission are used in your area before ordering! If it's P25 you need, you're better off with a scanner such as the BCD996P2.
The BCD160DN form factor is very similar to that used for the BC125AT handheld scanner. Battery charge times can be changed from the 14-hour default to a much more reasonable 3-hour timeframe. With 1,000 memory channels available, there's plenty of room for your favorites, and then some! While the BNC rubber 'duck' antenna is adequate for nearby action, the BNC antenna connector allows hookup to external mobile or base antennas, which will substantially improve reception.
I really like the ease of operation for this scanner, and its companion desktop, the BCD260DN. I think you will, too.
