The radar detector works great with considerable range and advance warning. However, with new cars having fewer (if any) 12v outlets, it's time to offer a USB-C cable and/or adapter to use in USB ports.
I’ve been using the R8w for a week now, and it’s replaced my Uniden R3. After setting up the BSM blocking and other settings per internet recommendations this detector is much quieter then my R3, which makes it definitely better. With only a week’s use I don’t have much feedback, but first impression is very good.
Solid Adapter. Much nicer than the regular SMA with the **** on nut type adapters you can find everywhere.
When I receive the radar detector, it should have already had the latest updates. Mine did not, and I am having difficulty using my PC to do the transfer of the update.
It doesn't block a lot of the false alerts in town and so far the device doesn't remember them. Also I gave up on trying to figure out how to update the thing. You basically have to have a computer science degree from MIT to figure it out. Wish I bought the one that has Wi-Fi. Lastly 90% of the menu settings you will never use. It has 50,000 selections thats easily to **** up. All I use is Town, Hyw, and Auto. It still over all is a good detector.
If you swap your R8 between rides, don't mess with those cheap 3rd party mounts... I tried 2 and they were worthless... spend the extra $$ and buy the Uniden factory mount for your R8... it is rock solid, high quality and carefree... get it, mount it, and drive worry-free!
So far works great and is very sensitive. Takes some fine tuning to get it where you want it.
I've had radar detectors since the early 1980's. Some bad, some good. This detector is among the best on the market today. The mute button is in a poor location and hard to use. The RJ-11 power connection is outdated, remember it was used for land-line telephone connections. USB-A & USB-C cables with the RJ-11 connector are 3x as expensive. In short it could be updated but still worth the money!
Purchased a AAA battery pack for an old radio. Through neglecr, original battery failed. So glad Uniden continues to offer part support for old products- allows the use and sustainment of a perfectly good radio, and saves it from the trash.
I've been using this for a little over a week. It has nice range and the direction arrows are very helpful compared to my past detectors. Wifi updating is very convenient
It seems like a great device. But in 2025 why do we still use 12V connectors (Cigarette Lighter). I don't want to hard wire it because I want to use it with multiple vehicles. My daily driver does not have a 12V connection at the front of the car. My other car has one but it is inconveniently placed. The App is great and makes using the device better, but it is not able to update software via the connection. It has to be plugged into a computer. Seems antiquated these days.
